Finally visited Oliveto in Roanoke and to say I was impressed is an understatement. We were greeted as we entered the store by Bob, who without being pushy, explained the store layout and invited us us peruse and taste the various oils and vinegars. Oils are all single-estate regional varieties and are arranged from mild to robust. Vinegars included traditional dark varieties as well as white balsamics many of which are infused with different flavors such as Blenheim Apricot, Coconut, or Sicilian Lemon. Some of the infused vinegars are created by crushing the whole fruit together with the grapes. Many of the olive oils are also infused with such flavors as Wild Mushroom and Sage or Tuscan Herbs.
I chose two varieties of olive oil...
  • Favolosa - a medium intensity Italian oil with a lingering peppery note
  • Manzanilla - a Robust Spanish olive oil with an bold olive taste
Also purchased...
  • 18 year aged Traditional Balsamic Vinegar
  • Pure Walnut oil
Since leaving the store, my mind has been conjuring up recipes to highlight the flavors of each! If you are interested in only the finest olive oils and/or balsamic vinegars, you should check out Oliveto, a true gem on the Roanoke foodie scene.
